Diversity and Inclusion comes in all forms, including age.
It mystifies me why any business would discriminate based on a number (job requirements dependent). Maybe this is because I am 50 but feel more capable now than I did in my 30s.
Older workers matter. Multigenerational teams, especially in software development, helps bring a breadth of experience and opinions. It encourages creativity and sparks conversation. That knowledge exchange helps those with lesser experience develop faster and supports a growth mindset.
Age should also not restrict promotion, training, and mentoring. Everyone wants to progress and feel valued. Positive self-esteem comes from how you’re treated and having a strong lifestyle balance.
So this National Older Workers week, I want to celebrate and raise a glass to all those fabulous people over 50 still out there making a difference in the world.
